Description
The woodlands of a central Texas wildlife center seem to be a good home for the roan antelope, whose native habitats are woodlands, savanna and grasslands areas of west and central Africa. However, in their native habitats they survive mostly in protected areas and they are regionally extinct in two African countries. Their loss in their former range areas is due to agricultural expansion and road and settlement construction. Roan antelopes are named for their roan color (a reddish brown). They have lighter underbellies, white eyebrows and cheeks and black faces. They have short, erect manes, and very light beards. Both sexes have backward curving ringed horns although they are slightly shorter in females.
