Description
Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge, located northwest of Austin Texas in the Hill Country, has over eight miles of hiking trails spread across three public use areas. Along the hikes you occasionally break out of the forest and have a view of the surrounding terrain! The refuge has been identified as an internationally Important Bird Area, an official designation indicating its unique importance to birds, specifically the golden-cheeked warbler and black-capped vireo. The refuge harbors 245 bird species for part or all of the year. Almost half are neotropical migratory birds that breed in the U.S. and winter south of the border. The National Wildlife Refuge System, within the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, manages a national network of lands and waters set aside to conserve America's fish, wildlife, and plants.
