Description
It's a very surreal experience...hundreds of tourists staring out into the countryside. It seems like a very lovely and peaceful countryside, yet in the distance you are looking at North Korea. It is the most heavily militarized border in the world, and there are frequent 'incidents', deadly and otherwise, between north and south. You sign a waiver when you visit that you realize you might be killed. Yes, very surreal. This is the view from the Dora Observatory which is on the South Korean side of the 38th parallel. Situated on top of Dorasan (Mount Dora), the observatory looks across the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). From here, visitors can catch a rare glimpse of the reclusive North Korean state, including a propaganda town. Ironically, because of its low population density and restrained development, the area surrounding the Military Demarcation Line (including the DMZ), is able to maintain excellent level of natural environment and is highly valued for environmental resource and undisrupted ecosystem.

Wow, wonderful scene... But a very scary situation.... signing the waiver and putting yourself in potential danger.....
