Description
I was visiting my very last lighthouse on the great Pacific Northwest lighthouse tour of 2014, #20! I had to take the ferry from Seattle over to Vashon Island to the west, drive south and east across a narrow strip to Maury Island. After a short walk from the parking lot, I reached the lighthouse. But before I could even think about visiting the lighthouse, I was blown away by the sight of Mt Rainier across the Puget sound from where I was! It towers over Seattle and the whole Seattle area even though it is 54 miles to the southeast. The houses look tiny, the plane flying into Seattle airport looks tiny! Mount Rainier is a massive stratovolcano. It is the most topographically prominent mountain in the contiguous United States and the Cascade Volcanic Arc, with a summit elevation of 14,411 ft (4,392 m). I have a somewhat romantic attachment to Mt Rainier since my husband summited there with friends 'back in the day'.
